CMHA of NB’s Peer Support Program includes Peer Support Consultants who oversee the Certified Peer Support Worker Training, First Responder Peer Supporter Training, Community Peer Supporter Workshop, Campus Peer Support, Youth Peer Support Training, as well as areas of practice including the New Brunswick College of Well-Being, and Psychological Health and Safety Standards. CMHA of NB’s Peer Support Consultants will oversee the new positions of Community Peer Support Worker in communities across New Brunswick.
The Community Peer Support Worker will function as part of the Peer Support team to provide direct service delivery in community to peers, offering advocacy, non-clinical peer support interventions (one-on-one and group format), peer support outreach activities including education and liaison work, ongoing professional development, operational administrative and documentation tasks, and support tasks related to the overall execution of Peer Support initiatives for the province of New Brunswick by CMHA of NB.
This is a non-clinical role. A Peer Support Worker is a trained individual who has their own lived experience who provides support to peers, empowering them to make choices related to their life based on self-determination.
Responsibilities include:
- Peer support advocacy including:
- acting as a recovery ally and role model
- inspiring hope
- Promote and advocate for the recognition of peer support values.
- Advocate for the rights and interests of peers
- Peer support interventions including:
- Non-clinical one-on-one and group services
- Use of Specialized Peer Intervention Skills to support peer recovery processes.
- Supporting peers in defining recovery goals
- Use of strengths-based approach
- Develop, promote, and facilitate group programs or activities.
- Peer support outreach
- Work collaboratively with internal and external partners
- Provide education and awareness around the role of Peer Support Workers
- Participate in case coordination, liaison, and facilitate referrals to community resources.
- Participate in community outreach activities.
- Documentation / Administrative tasks
- Outcome and evaluation measure documentation
- Peer information and documentation related to interventions.
- Report program-related statistical data
- Complete incident reports and other documentation when required.
- Other tasks as assigned and related to role and Provincial Peer Support Program
ABOUT YOU
You will have a combination of relevant education and work experience. Additional skills and experience are as follows:
- Bilingualism is preferred (English/French)
- High School Diploma is required.
- Certified Peer Support Training Program of New Brunswick is required.
- Post-secondary education or coursework in areas related to Psychology, Addictions, Sociology, etc. are considered an asset.
- Mental health, addictions or suicide awareness / intervention trainings are an asset (ASIST, Changing Minds, NVCI, Mental Health First Aid, etc.).
- Workplace First Aid /CPR certification or willingness to be trained.
- Excellent communication skills including speaking, listening and written communication skills.
- Professional, compassionate, and non-judgmental approach to communication skills.
- Excellent computer literacy skills (MS Office365 / Databases).
- Empathy towards persons of diverse backgrounds and lived experiences.
- Knowledge/familiarity of the mental health, addiction, and social service systems.
- Ability to work effectively in a wide range of settings and environments.
- Comfortable working in both one-on-one and group settings.
- Group planning, coordination, and facilitation skills.
- Proficient critical thinking, problem solving, and demonstrates sound judgment.
- Exceptional organizational and time management skills; demonstrated ability to self-manage time and multiple tasks.
- Strong attention to detail and a high degree of accuracy in work.
- Ability to ensure the security and confidentiality of information.
- Interpersonal skills, flexibility and able to work effectively at an individual, program, and system level.

- Highly motivated and passionate about mental health and anti-oppressive work.
- Passion, personal alignment, and commitment to the mission of CMHA of NB.
- Demonstrated competence in understanding cultural diversity and works effectively with individuals with various cultural backgrounds.
- A recent satisfactory criminal record and vulnerable sector check is required.
ABOUT OUR WORKING CONDITIONS
The Community Peer Support Worker will work from the CMHA of NB Community Hub 28 Main St, Saint George, NB E5C 3J2
- This is a full-time position with benefits.
- The usual work week is 32 hours, with working hours typically occurring between 8:00am – 5:00pm four days a week with a one-hour lunch break.
- Flexible working hours including occasional weekday evenings is a requirement.
- Ability to travel within the service region is required.
- Some travel throughout the province may be required.
- Working in a variety of settings or in partnership with other health agencies is required.
- The Community Peer Support Worker will report directly to the Peer Support Consultant, as a part of the Provincial Peer Support team.
