Abbey’s story:
I was diagnosed with anxiety at the age of 12 and although I struggled off and on throughout my teenage years, things got particularly bad when I started university. I not only had generalized anxiety but was
struggling with OCD, emetophobia, and separation anxiety. Things were really bad for a couple of years. There were times where I couldn’t be alone. Times where I would spend the whole day crying. Things seemed really dark for a while.
But with support from my then boyfriend, now husband, and my family I decided to take some time off of school and work. I was able to take the time to work through some things with my therapist and get on a good medication to help balance out my serotonin and now I’m doing so much better.
That’s really what My poem “Fighting Together” is about, all those people over the years who have helped pull me out of dark places and who continuously remind me of the things in life that are worth fighting for. Everyone from my therapist, to my psychiatrist, and my family and friends, they have all played such an integral part in my healing. Living with mental illness can be so isolating and that’s why having a support system like this to fall back on can make all the difference. They are what gave me hope when I had none, and so I’m dedicating this poem to them, and to anyone who is a support person for someone because you make all the difference.
Lyrics
All alone.
Am I alone?
Cause I really can’t tell anymore
Everything’s dark
I can’t see light
I’m tired of fighting this fight
Then your hand
It reaches out
Pulls me up when I’m starting to drown
Out from the depths
Onto the shore
And I remember what I’m fighting for
I’m fighting for life
Fighting for love
Fighting for all the dreams that I dreamt up
From where we stand
Holding your hand
The world’s a bit brighter
My heart’s a bit lighter
When we face it together
We’ll fight together
Broken
Am I broken?
Is this how my life’s supposed to be
Everyone smiles
They’re all so tough
I try but I’m never enough
Then your voice
It calls out
Builds me up when I’m starting to doubt
It pulls me out
Out of my mind
Reminding me I’m not alone in this fight
I’m fighting for life
Fighting for love
Fighting for all the dreams that I dreamt up
From where I stand
Holding your hand
The world’s a bit brighter
My heart’s a bit lighter
When we face it together
We’ll fight together
Cause,
We’re fighting for life
We’re Fighting for love
Fighting for all the dreams that we dreamt up
From where I stand
Holding your hand
The world’s a bit brighter
My heart’s a bit lighter
When we face it together
We’ll fight together
