Austin’s story:
I was first motivated to write a song after scrolling through social media and coming across a post from an old classmate of mine, who had made the daunting decision to undergo a FTM transition.
The person was being incredibly open about their struggle and was being met with fear and misunderstanding, or worse yet, silence.
It was through this lens, I attempted to glean some understanding of how isolating it must feel and “A Better Life” became an ode to those going through that which isn’t always seen on the surface or immediately understood.
I walk the streets, on the wrong side
People tellin’ me, I’m the wrong type
I do believe, I could conceive
Of a better life
People look at me, only sideways
Can’t mind those, grinnin’ in my face
Did you think I chose, the life I lead?
Like it wouldn’t be easier to not be me?
I can see it’s been a long day
Walk with me, along the wrong way
Let the river cold, wash away your strife
Wake anew, in a better life
Woah oh oh
Woke up and decided, to put on my shoes
Before I woke, they had decided, I would lose
I wasn’t in the game, this has gotta be a joke
I had to learn to speak, before I spoke
We’re not to blame, for how we’re made
With a little time, you could think the same
I can see it’s been a long day
Walk with me, along the wrong way
Let the river cold, wash away your strife
Wake anew, in a better life
Woah oh oh
We’re on our way, to a better life
We’re on our way, to a better life
I can see it’s been a long day
People walk with me, along the wrong way
To the river cold, wash away your strife
We can awake anew, in a better life
