The Once’s Story
The Once – named for a distinct Newfoundland phrase that means “imminently” – is a Newfoundland folk trio known for their succinct, three-part harmonies, and their compelling mix of traditional and original material. The idea for the group was hatched in 2006 when Geraldine Hollett, Phil Churchill, and Andrew Dale met at a summer theatre company. Both understated and emotionally rich, the Once have proven to be just as adept at adapting to other folk-friendly genres like country, indie pop, and Americana, something they did with great aplomb on the Juno-nominated albums Row Upon Row of the People They Know and Departures.
Lyrics
Here I am
Far from my dreams
I’m all alone
Or so it seems
I try to go easy
On myself
To not be afraid
To ask for help
I built a wall
To keep out the pain
I built a wall
To let nobody in
I built a wall
Didn’t realize that I did
Now where, where do I begin
I know I’ve made
A lot of mistakes
Now I live
With guilt and heartache
I built a wall
Can I find
A life to live
I’ve so far to go
With so much to forgive
I built a wall
Didn’t realize that I did
Now where, where do I begin
I built a wall
To keep out the pain
I built a wall
To let nobody in
I built a wall
Didn’t realize that I did
Now where, where do I begin
